Melissa Garrett
Registered Psychotherapist, MA, BA
Hi, I'm Melissa! I am a registered psychotherapist and co-founder of The Hub, following a lengthy career as an elementary school teacher and special-education specialist. One of my greatest assets as a clinician is a full and challenging life of parenting, teaching, and advocating for under-served youth and families in need of support.
My clients would describe me as empathic, compassionate, and accepting - I'm often told "you are such a good listener!" and my couples' clients would attest that I have a knack for creative problem-solving.
My Specialties
Working with LGBTQIA2S+ folx: Like my co-founder Melanie, I hold a degree in Sexuality, Marriage, and Family Studies - a program renowned for its' focus on supporting the queer community. I have a great depth of knowledge and experience that supports me in providing queer-informed mental health and relationship care. In addition, I have a strong background in advocating for equity, diversity, and inclusion in my school-board experiences.
Parenting and School Related Concerns: As a certified Ontario teacher and special-education specialist, I know the ins and outs of topics such as IEP's, in-classroom support, advocating for educational assessments, and liaising with school professionals. 20 years in a kindergarten classroom helps me to support parents through challenging behaviors, special needs, bullying, and general parenting concerns.
Couples Therapy: I am trained in both Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and The Gottman Method of couples therapy. Together, we can explore a variety of topics such as sex and intimacy, financial concerns, illness of a partner, recovering from betrayal or infidelity, and communication concerns. I am committed to making sure both partners feel heard, respected, and supported.
Trauma Recovery: I am particularly experienced in recovery from trauma related to grief and abuse - this includes narcissistic abuse, intimate partner violence, and relational trauma (e.g., abandonment), as well as supporting individuals through topics such as death of a parent/partner, critical illness and preparing for death, and untangling estate and post-death concerns.
